Week 3... Could have been better.

So, I'm late posting for week 3... I've been fighting a bug or something and haven't felt great so I haven't made time to write.

Week 3 started out strong but turned "meh" towards the end. I slacked a bit this week and I finally realized I NEED water when I run.

Monday, January 24
Miles - 3.00
Total Time - 00:36:51
Average minute/mile - 12:17
Location - YMCA Treadmill (combo of 1.0 and 1.5% incline)
Thoughts - A good run! My average minute/mile keeps getting better!

Wednesday, January 26
Miles - 4.00
Total Time - 00:48:52
Average minute/mile - 12:13
Location - YMCA Treadmill (1.0% incline)
Thoughts - A great run! I felt AMAZING afterward and once again, I beat my best average pace.

Thursday, January 27
I suck. I skipped running Thursday with a plan to make it up on Friday. Friday started with a hangover (I'm being honest!) and was filled with some exciting stuff (which I can't share quite yet) all of which did not include a 3 mile run ... like I said, I suck. I won't let it happen again! If I miss a run it will be because I (or someone close to me) am sick or injured, no other excuse will work! Hold me to this!

Saturday, January 29
Miles - 7.02
Total Time - 01:32:04
Average minute/mile - 13:07
Location - Lake Hefner
Thoughts - Oh my. This run started out strong but unfortunately went the way of the crapper. It was an amazingly beautiful day (76 degrees in January!) and I saw my friend, Nathan, who is also training for the marathon! All was well... until I became so incredibly thirsty. I could not think about anything but a drink and my mouth was so dry. I think it happened around the 3 mile marker and I had no options (unless I wanted to climb the wall and drink straight from Lake Hefner!). So by the end of the run, I was a bit dehydrated and could only run for short bursts. My legs felt like they were a million pounds each. No bueno. So, my average pace suffered. This has been remedied.

So, that's week 3. On Sunday, I went to my FAVORITE running store, Red Coyote! I bought myself an Amphipod hydration belt. I haven't had a long run to try it yet but I know I am going to LOVE it. No more situations in which I am without water!

All this running has another plus to it... I've lost almost 5 pounds in 3 weeks! Woo! Now if only I would start eating better (I need to find a good, healthy eating plan for all this running...), I'm sure that number would continue to grow! I'm definitely not trying to lose a ton of weight but I am looking forward to slimming down and toning up in time for summer while I train for my marathon! :)

Because of my "tardiness" on this blog, I partially know what week 4 holds. It is off to a good start but this crazy winter storm is going to affect my schedule. I WILL NOT miss a run this week though. I may be on the treadmill ALL week (yes, even for long runs... boo) because of snow covered trails and crazy low temps (wind chills in the negatives!) but you can bet when I blog on Sunday that I will have completed all four of my runs! Here's to a kick ass week 4... treadmill and all!

And Here's to Week 2!!

Well, week 2 of training has come and gone! I put in a total of 16.30 miles this week and I kept all of my average minute/mile times under 13:00 minutes! This is something that makes me happy because every little bit I take off of my average time gets me closer to my goal pace. Other than my left ankle feeling a bit sore today, I am feeling great!

Monday, January 17
Miles - 3.25
Total Time - 00:40:13
Average minute/mile - 12:22
Location - Ardmore Regional Park
Thoughts - A good run! It was a nice day. My time would have been better if I would have either paused the time at the stop light both ways OR not have been stuck at the light both ways for pretty much the entire light cycle. Oh, and an ant bit me while I was cooling down and stretching by my car... it freaking hurt!

Wednesday, January 19
Miles - 4.01
Total Time - 00:51:33
Average minute/mile - 12:51
Location - YMCA Treadmill
Thoughts - Went OK. Definitely my worst run of the week. I was crazy thirsty on this run. I didn't drink enough water and I had a salty lunch. I didn't pay attention to my note to self last week I guess! Lesson officially learned! I did keep my average time under 13 minutes though, so that's a plus. :)

Friday, January 21
Miles - 3.00
Total Time - 00:37:13
Average minute/mile - 12:24
Location - YMCA Treadmill
Thoughts - This was supposed to be a Thursday run but my schedule got screwed up and I didn't get to run on Thursday. I was a little worried about it being right before my "long" run of the week so I did take it a little easy. I was happy with this run.

Saturday, January 22
Miles - 6.04
Total Time - 01:15:53
Average minute/mile - 12:34
Location - Ardmore Regional Park
Thoughts - I was very happy with this run! I felt really good during and after and I kept my average minute/mile down! One negative to this run was that one of my shoelaces, which I always double knot, un-knotted and loosened (never actually completely untying). This caused my shoe to loosen and I managed to rub a blister on the bottom arch of my right foot. Silly me, I didn't stop because the "looseness" of the shoe wasn't obvious and since I didn't see shoelaces flopping around, I didn't stop to tie it. Another lesson learned, right?

At the beginning of the week, Saturday's run had me a bit nervous (actually every Saturday run has me nervous, haha) because last week wasn't great. This Saturday's run actually made me pretty excited, though. It helped me realize that this is only week 2! I still have 14 more weeks to get ready for this thing and I know I will keep getting better and stronger every week!

So, week 2 was a success! Here's to hoping week 3 is even better!

One week down!

I'm proud to say I survived week one! As you know, I am training for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and am on a 16 week journey to prepare myself for the 26.2 mile run. During week 1, I put in 15.51 total miles! 10.2 of those miles were done on a treadmill because we had a serious arctic cold front come through this week and I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to temperatures in the 20's and wind chills in the teens. Chances are good I won't be running in these temperatures for the marathon on *May 1* so I'm going to be a baby and not train in those conditions!!

Before I give a the breakdown of my runs this week, I'd like to share my goals with you. I am hoping to finish the marathon in 5 hours, which I googled as being the "average" finish time for females. I know this is my first marathon and may not make that number but I like to dream big. ;) In order to finish in just over 5 hours, I need to have an average pace of 5.2 mph which is an 11:30 minute/mile.

Monday, January 10
Miles - 3.10
Total Time - 00:39:54
Average minute/mile - 12:52
Location - YMCA Treadmill
Thoughts - First run of the training program! Felt great, no complaints!

Wednesday, January 12
Miles - 4.00
Total Time - 00:54:08
Average minute/mile - 13:32
Location - YMCA Treadmill
Thoughts - Eek! I didn't drink enough water during the day and felt like crap about 1.75 miles in. Note to self - drink more water... especially on run days!

Thursday, January 13
Miles - 3.10
Total Time - 00:38:14
Average minute/mile - 12:20
Location - YMCA Treadmill
Thoughts - Better total time and average minute/mile than Monday! Felt great during and after!

Saturday, January 15
Miles - 5.31
Total Time - 01:11:48
Average minute/mile - 13:31
Location - Ardmore Regional Park
Thoughts - First outside run! Noticed a definite decrease in energy for the last 1.5 miles but nothing that can't improve! I had some Jelly Belly Sport Beans before this run... I am going to get several different gel packs and see which I like best to use as my runs get longer and for the actual marathon.

So, as you see I am definitely not the fastest or the best runner out there but that's part of the challenge! I wasn't very good at doing consistent runs in the months leading up to the start of my training due to various life events so I'm not disappointed with where I am. I am working on maintaining a steady pace throughout the run rather than start quickly and not have any energy left! I can do sprints all day but since this isn't a sprint, it won't do me any good! :) Looking forward to showing off my progress throughout these 16 weeks!

On to week 2!!

And so it begins!!

Monday marks the start of my 16 week marathon training schedule!! On May 1 I will be ready to take on 26.2 miles! Eek!! I have some support for this one... my husband, Eric, and our friend, Nathan, have decided to take on the challenge with me! Support is nice but honestly, in the end it'll be up to me to complete the challenge! I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty nervous... but I'm definitely more excited than nervous!

And so it begins!! I am excited to have a place to share my adventure!!

A Week from H-E-L-L

Well, I thought this was going to be a productive, normal week. I was mistaken! I haven't been able to run all week because of my stupid abdominal pain but it's not like I've had a lot of free time anyways. I have been working 10-12 hour days pretty much all week. I made it to the weekend, though and enjoyed watching my Cowboys beat Tech Saturday, so that was a positive! :)

I am starting to feel better and my doctor and I are working on figuring out what is causing my pain, so that's all good. I'll keep it at that!

I *think* this week will be more like what I was planning on last week being but who knows... life is always full of surprises! I'm not going to complain too much though, I am fortunate to have a job that keeps me busy and allows me to afford trips and other luxuries in my life! I realize not everyone is as fortunate and I am thankful for my jobs and the life I have.

That said, I am looking forward to getting some good runs and workouts in this week, homecoming and a big game against Nebraska Saturday, and getting closer to our trip to Bonaire (less than 2 weeks!)!!

Race for the Cure

On Saturday I did the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K. I am not sure about my time as I can't find where they have them listed but I know it wasn't anything to brag about. There were several factors affecting this -

1) I had to walk off and on due to abdominal pain I've been having all week (not to mention during and after the race!). Not only has this pain been a pain in my abdomen it's been a pain to my running routine!

2) The event was a bit of a challenge because it was so large (15,000 people!) and it was for walkers and runners. I was dodging walkers and groups by running on sidewalks and grassy areas. My left ankle was unstable when on the uneven surfaces but did well. I am hoping as I increase my mileage I can continue running without an ankle brace.

3) I went to a pub the night before the race to watch the OSU football game, stayed up until 2AM (the race started at 8:15), and drank a lot of beer. These factors alone made the 5K a bit more challenging... I won't be doing that again!

Regardless of time, it was nice to do an event. My next 5K will be November 20 for the Ardmore Chigger Chase. I'm wanting a time of 30 minutes or less. I know I can do it!

Oops!

So, I'm once again blogging after a lengthy delay. Life just gets in the way of blogging sometimes!

That said - I'm going to do my best to update more often. I think if I have a specific thing I'm updating about I should do better. I've registered for the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon on May 1, 2011 which will be my first full marathon (I did the half last year). I am currently getting back into running shape after my ankle accident this summer and am going to be doing a few 5Ks in the upcoming months to get into a routine. At the beginning of the year I will begin my full marathon training schedule. I would like to blog a bit more about my running since it has become a big part of my life. I will be adding in all the tidbits of daily life, too since most of my real life friends who read my blog have no desire to only read about my running. :) So, here's to hoping for more consistent posting from me!

Updates and Frustrations

Well, here I am finally writing again after a lengthy delay. Since I've last written I've been to California and become a LSVT LOUD clinician, had my car broken into and purse stolen (resulting in months of dealing with this crap... but the guy was caught), had my office close but didn't lose my job - I am just based out of another office, completed my first half marathon, spent 2 weeks in Hawaii, turned a year older, and just recently ruined my summer. How's that you ask? Well, I play co-ed slow pitch softball and I injured myself sliding into a base. :( I managed to break a bone and tear a ligament. When I injure myself I like to do it up big. So, I'll be spending most of the summer in a boot to immobilize my ankle. I am so incredibly frustrated.

I'm frustrated because this summer I was going to begin training for my first triathlon. I was planning on taking part in an Olympic triathlon in October and was going to train all summer to be ready for it. I know I will complete one after I heal, I'm just frustrated that I can't do much of anything right now. I want to be running, swimming (for training and at the lake), playing softball, playing golf, ANYTHING but sitting here with a stupid boot on my foot. I guess this is just another curve ball in life. I'll get through it, I'm just frustrated.

My sweet hubby has been awesome though. I love him and appreciate everything he is doing to take care of me and cheer me up. :)

Illnesses and Life

Well, February is halfway over and I've been sick for most of it. I came down with the flu (influenza B) for several days the first week of February and then I had a nasty cough for a week so I went to the doctor again. Well, fortunately I went early because they caught the beginning of pneumonia, thanks to the flu I had. No wonder I had such a nasty cough and was still feeling "blah". I'm on some hardcore meds to try and get rid of this crap which is great but they make me feel... weird. And apparently, one of the meds increases my risk of rupturing a tendon? That is great to know... especially with all my workouts and training I'm doing. I'm hoping to beat this stuff for good and get back to 100% ASAP. This crap has caused my hubby and I to postpone our Valentine's Day plans until I feel better. I spent the day relaxing with my hubby. He has been a good nurse. :)

This week brings a busy 3 days of work before I jump on a plane for sunny California! It's for business but I am excited. Hello In-N-Out Burger!! Oh how I've missed you! :) I love California! I'm also looking forward to enjoying warmer weather... I'm ready for our weather to warm up!

So, with all this illness crap I'm dealing with, I sure hope I'm doing better for my trip. I'm functioning with this crap (obviously - I went back to work with this lung crap last week before I went to the doctor and am working this week, too) but I just don't feel great. I'm ready to feel better so I can get into tip-top shape for the marathon (hopefully this stuff hasn't completely ruined my training for it) and our 13 day, 12 night Hawaiian vacation!

I'm back!

So, I'm not very good at this whole blogging thing. I use other social networks but I am lacking in the blog world. I'm going to try and change that! I've got a lot going on in life and I'm going to write it down. So, here's to a fresh start!

An Update...

Its been a while since I updated; I should try to get into the habit of it so it happens more than every 4 months! I'll get into the details of whats been going on later because its late and I have projects I need to finish, but I will give you a quick lil post. I am back in grad school in OK after a year off and I actually think that year off did a lot of good for me... I'll talk more about it and the move later! Its just good to be back... so I can finish and get a REAL job! Hope all is well and I won't go another 4 months... I promise!

Shannon

Some people may understand this... some not, its just something I've been thinking about since the press conference yesterday.
**Eddie, you and your family are in my prayers. Randy said it perfectly when he said not to judge a man by his mistakes, but by what he does to correct those mistakes. You can do this. In addition to your family, I (along with your entire OSU family) am behind you completely. We want you to come out winning... like you always do. We love you and wish you the best. Thank you for all you have done for us... get better, we'd love to see you hit 800! No matter what happens you are in our hearts, Eddie! We love you!**

Some Pics

I have a headache and don't really feel like thinking about what to say, so I thought I would put up a few pictures.

The top one is Eric and me at a SF Giants game. The second is Bender and the third is Ellie. They are basically our kids right now, since we aren't planning to have any in the immediate future, and they are spoiled like they are our kids. They are so stinkin' cute and sweet! We love them! Look at their faces, how could you not love them?!?

Hope you enjoyed the pictures! I'll put some thought into a post later this week. Until then, take care!

A Wonderful Day

Here are some pictures to give you an idea of the beauty surrounding this wonderful day!

Sorry I haven't written much lately; I've been busy and haven't had the chance.

Yesterday Eric and I went to Yosemite. I went with my family when they visited in August, but this was Eric's first time. I can't get enough of this place. It is absolutely beautiful there. I was excited to plan a day trip for the two of us in Yosemite Valley. We ate a delicious lunch at the coolest hotel (The Ahwahnee) and had a loser of a server, we wandered around the hotel grounds (absolutely beautiful!) and had fun climbing rocks, we went to Bridalveil Falls and climbed more rocks, went to the Tunnel View and admired the scenery, and then we had a bit of drama!

As we were driving to Glacier Point for the sunset, Eric noticed the hills were eating more gas than we realized, so we had to drive about thirty minutes to Wawona for the nearest gas station. Being on a time schedule with the sun, we knew we would rather miss the sunset than see it and have to walk over 30 miles for gas. So Eric went as fast as he could up and down the hills and around all the curves to fill up the car. Once the car was full of gas, we decided to turn around and try and make it to Glacier Point because we had made good time and might be able to enjoy the very end of sunset and get some good pictures.

We might have caught part of the sunset if we had hit the road 15 seconds earlier. We got stuck behind a minivan that was CRAWLING through the turns. No biggie, right? They can use a turnout and we can get past them. NO, this driver decided he/she wasn't holding up the two cars behind them and skipped numerous turnouts. A jeep behind us began honking at them every time they skipped a turnout and everyone was irritated! About twenty minutes later, they finally decided to used a turnout. Thanks a lot, we didn't really want to see the sunset!

We still went up to Glacier Point because we were going to look at the stars. We got there at dusk and the sun was sinking quickly behind the mountains. We looked down on the valley and the lights and enjoyed the crisp air. The stars began appearing as the light disappeared. They were BEAUTIFUL! It is amazing how many there were because there were no lights, clouds, smog, and because we were at an altitude of over 7,000 feet! As we talked and looked around, an astronomer brought a group of people up to the point for a lesson. We joined in and learned about and saw several constellations, it was very interesting!

I have decided that I want to go to Yosemite in the winter to see everything covered in snow and also in the spring when the snow is melting and the falls are raging with the water from it! Yosemite is a place you should visit at least four times, once every season! I've really only been in the valley and I know there is so much more to the park that I have to see! It is just an amazing place!

Saturday was a very wonderful day. Eric and I were able to enjoy the beauty of Yosemite together! You can't beat a day like that!

Out sick

It looks as if I will spend the weekend on drugs. I have been out sick the past 2 days (Thursday and Friday) and I went to the doctor today. She didn't really tell me a lot, but she said my throat was inflamed and gave me some antibiotics. It will be nice when they start working because my throat is killing me.

On Wednesday, I went to the "girl doctor" (yeah, yeah, sorry about the tmi) and we started discussing the headaches I have ALL THE TIME. She said it sounds like a tension headache and prescribed me muscle relaxers and motrin. She said I should wait to start these until the weekend. Even though I have been home for the last two days, I decided to wait until tonight to take them. I haven't felt well enough to go to the pharmacy and when Eric got home last night, I didn't want to send him back out for it. He had a long day and was exhausted.

We'll see how it goes. I am hoping I feel well enough to go to the Winchester Mystery House and Santa Cruz on Sunday with Eric. We were supposed to go Monday (Labor Day) but I had yet another headache that wouldn't go away with Ibprofen or rest. I'll keep my fingers crossed!
Eric and I are going to grab some In and Out burgers (because fortunately, my appetite has not been affected by this illness! haha) and get my presciptions filled, so I will write more later! Take care!

Getting Started...

Hi! If you are reading this thing, welcome. My name is Shannon. I don't know if I should start writing "things about me" like we all did in elementary school, or if I should just let things happen.

I'll guess I'll give the basics. I am very happily married, living in California temporarily, and am about a year and a half away from getting my Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I am an OSU alum and a Cowboys football and basketball fanatic. My husband and I have 2 cats (Bender and Ellie) that are spoiled to no end. When we buy a house in a couple years, we will add dogs to the mix and then a couple years after that kids. Until then, we are going to spoil ourselves and travel!

I think I will leave it at that for now. To give you a heads up, this blog will be a lot of personal happenings and opinion pieces on the happenings around the world. Really just a basic blog... I put what I feel like putting!

p.s. If you were wondering, the title is a line from "Only in Dreams" by Weezer. They are my one of my all-time favorite bands. It is a beautiful song (even better live) and that line is true to me. You have to take a chance with some things to get somewhere good.
